The Nakshatra System in Vedic Asrology
A Nakshatra, also known as Birth Star, is a celestial division along the ecliptic, consisting of 13 degrees and 20 minutes. Each Nakshatra holds unique qualities and symbolism, influencing an individual's life based on its position at their birth. The Nakshatra where the Moon resides at the time of birth is known as the Janma Nakshatra.
Ancient astrologers initially analyzed the impact of zodiac signs on an individual's life, dividing the zodiac into 12 segments, each comprising 30 degrees. They extended this division into 27 parts, termed Nakshatras or Birth Stars, with each Nakshatra spanning 13 degrees 20 minutes—a distinct difference from the 30-degree duration of a Rashi.
The Birth Star, or Nakshatra, forms just a segment of the larger Rashi. Every Rashi is governed by a specific planet, aligning the nature and impact of these signs with the qualities of their planetary rulers. Likewise, constellations were assigned lords reflective of their attributes, resulting in each Nakshatra embodying the traits of its associated ruling planet. The naming of each constellation (Nakshatra) derives from the star closest to it within the division of the zodiac into 27 parts.
Each Nakshatra spans 13 degrees 20 minutes, divided into four quarters of 3 degrees 20 minutes each—totaling 108 such quarters across the 27 Nakshatras. These quarters are allocated to signs, with a set of 9 quarters belonging to each sign (108 divided by 12). As a result, 2.25 Nakshatras form a Rashi. Both Rashis and Nakshatras originate from the zero degree of Aries, the starting point of the zodiac.
